NFL Week 1 Recap: A Song and a Grade for All 32 Teams
One game of evidence, 32 completely rational conclusions. Every team gets a song, an offensive grade, a defensive grade and the players who defined their Week 1.
··17 min read
The NFL is back.
And with exactly one game of evidence, it's obviously time to make completely rational conclusions about all 32 teams.
Some teams looked like legitimate contenders. Some survived games that got way more interesting than they should have. And a few fanbases are already wondering whether it's too early to start looking at the 2027 NFL Draft.
For our Week 1 Recap, we're doing things a little differently.
Every team gets:
🎵 A song that sums up their performance
📈 An offensive grade
🛡️ A defensive grade
🔥 And the players who defined their Week 1
Let's get into it.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
🎵 “Stayin’ Alive” — Bee Gees
OFFENSE: C | DEFENSE: A
Seattle didn't dominate New England.
They survived New England.
After Sam Darnold left early, Drew Lock stepped in and did enough to keep Seattle within striking distance. Lock finished with 187 passing yards, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the star of the offense with 122 receiving yards.
But the defense won this game.
Seattle intercepted Drake Maye three times in the fourth quarter, completely flipping a game New England had controlled for long stretches.
That's the difference between 0-1 and 1-0.
It wasn't pretty.
It doesn't have to be.
Stayin' Alive.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
🎵 “Oops!... I Did It Again” — Britney Spears
OFFENSE: D | DEFENSE: A-
This one is going to hurt.
New England's defense did almost everything necessary to win an NFL football game, holding Seattle to just 13 points.
The offense couldn't finish the job.
Drake Maye had New England positioned to win before throwing three fourth-quarter interceptions.
Three.
That's not a typo.
For most of the game, the Patriots looked like they were going to start the season 1-0.
Then everything unraveled.
Oops!... I Did It Again.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
🎵 “Still D.R.E.” — Dr. Dre
OFFENSE: A- | DEFENSE: A+
Every offseason we ask the same question:
Is San Francisco's window finally closing?
The 49ers responded by beating the Rams 27-7.
Brock Purdy threw for 205 yards, Christian McCaffrey remained the centerpiece of the backfield, and San Francisco controlled the game on both sides of the football.
The offense put up 27.
The defense allowed seven.
That's about as complete as Week 1 performances get.
The rest of the NFC:
They're still here.
Still D.R.E.
LOS ANGELES RAMS
🎵 “Wake Me Up” — Avicii
OFFENSE: F | DEFENSE: D
Somebody tell Los Angeles the season started.
Seven points.
That's the number that matters.
Even with Puka Nacua producing 74 receiving yards, the Rams never generated enough consistent offense to finish drives against San Francisco — including a 12-play march that died on fourth down at the 1-yard line.
The defense wasn't much better, surrendering 27 to a division rival.
One game doesn't define a season.
But if you're going to lose Week 1, this isn't exactly the way you want to do it.
Wake Me Up.
CINCINNATI BENGALS
🎵 “The Boys Are Back in Town” — Thin Lizzy
OFFENSE: A- | DEFENSE: A
Cincinnati scoring 33 points isn't particularly surprising.
The defense might be.
Joe Burrow threw for 254 yards while Cincinnati's offense consistently took advantage of opportunities created by its defense.
And that defense created plenty.
The revamped Bengals unit forced four turnovers, including multiple costly mistakes from Baker Mayfield.
The Bengals already know they have enough offensive firepower to compete.
If this defense is legitimate?
The rest of the AFC should pay attention.
The Boys Are Back in Town.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
🎵 “My Own Worst Enemy” — Lit
OFFENSE: C- | DEFENSE: C
Sometimes the other team beats you.
Sometimes you beat yourself.
Tampa Bay spent Week 1 doing a little too much of the latter.
Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers put up 27 points, seven of them on a Josiah Trotter pick-six, but turnovers repeatedly handed Cincinnati opportunities.
That's the frustrating part.
There was enough offensive production to win this game.
But you can't continuously give possessions away against a good football team.
Tampa's biggest opponent Sunday?
Tampa.
My Own Worst Enemy.
DETROIT LIONS
🎵 “Livin’ on a Prayer” — Bon Jovi
OFFENSE: A- | DEFENSE: C-
Detroit was up 21-0.
This game was over.
Until it wasn't.
Jahmyr Gibbs was spectacular, carrying the ball a career-high 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns while also contributing as a receiver.
Then Detroit inexplicably allowed New Orleans back into the game.
Tyler Shough and the Saints erased the deficit and forced overtime before Detroit finally escaped 31-30.
The Lions won.
That's the good news.
The bad news?
They nearly turned a three-touchdown advantage into an all-time Week 1 collapse.
Livin' on a Prayer.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
🎵 “I Won’t Back Down” — Tom Petty
OFFENSE: A- | DEFENSE: C
Down 21-0.
Game over, right?
Not exactly.
Tyler Shough threw for a massive 410 yards, while Chris Olave exploded for 182 receiving yards as New Orleans mounted one of Week 1's best comebacks.
The Saints eventually forced overtime and came within a failed two-point conversion of completing it.
They didn't get the win.
But after looking completely dead earlier in the game, New Orleans was one play away from stealing it.
0-1 doesn't always tell the entire story.
I Won't Back Down.
NEW YORK JETS
🎵 “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” — McFadden & Whitehead
OFFENSE: B+ | DEFENSE: A
Hold on.
Are the Jets... competent?
Geno Smith played mistake-free football while Breece Hall and Braelon Allen helped New York establish a productive rushing attack.
The defense was even better.
Tennessee managed only 10 points, and the Jets consistently pressured Cam Ward while preventing the Titans from generating explosive plays.
Balanced offense.
Good quarterback play.
Strong defense.
1-0.
Jets fans, enjoy this.
Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now.
TENNESSEE TITANS
🎵 “Same Old Song and Dance” — Aerosmith
OFFENSE: D | DEFENSE: C-
New season.
New expectations.
Same problems.
Cam Ward spent much of the afternoon dealing with pressure, and Tennessee's offense never consistently threatened New York.
The Titans' longest offensive play went for just 14 yards.
That's not going to work.
Ten points.
A 13-point loss.
And a performance that looked alarmingly familiar.
It's only Week 1.
But Nashville wanted something new.
Instead?
Same Old Song and Dance.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
🎵 “Enter Sandman” — Metallica
OFFENSE: A+ | DEFENSE: A-
Goodnight, Indianapolis.
Lamar Jackson threw for 324 yards, Derrick Henry rushed for 144, and Zay Flowers torched Indianapolis for 150 receiving yards before leaving with an injury.
Baltimore put up 31 points before halftime and finished with more than 500 yards of offense.
Defensively, the Ravens consistently pressured Indianapolis and created turnovers.
Forty-one points.
More than 500 yards.
Dominant defense.
1-0.
Enter Sandman.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
🎵 “Welcome to the Jungle” — Guns N’ Roses
OFFENSE: C | DEFENSE: F
Welcome to Week 1.
Your assignment?
Stop Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry and Zay Flowers.
Good luck.
Daniel Jones couldn't generate enough through the air, although Jonathan Taylor provided a bright spot with more than 100 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.
Defensively?
There aren't many positives.
Baltimore generated 506 yards and scored 41.
Indianapolis just got an immediate lesson in what the top of the AFC looks like.
Welcome to the Jungle.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS
🎵 “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” — Pat Benatar
OFFENSE: C | DEFENSE: A+
Vintage Steelers football.
Aaron Rodgers and the offense weren't particularly impressive.
Fortunately, Pittsburgh still employs T.J. Watt.
Watt recorded two sacks and delivered the play of the game by intercepting Cooper Rush and returning it 35 yards for the game-deciding touchdown.
Alex Highsmith added two sacks, while Cameron Heyward knocked down three passes.
The offense can figure itself out later.
The defense already looks ready.
Hit Me With Your Best Shot.
ATLANTA FALCONS
🎵 “All by Myself” — Eric Carmen
OFFENSE: D+ | DEFENSE: B+
Somebody help Bijan Robinson.
Seriously.
With Cooper Rush starting at quarterback, nearly everything Atlanta accomplished offensively ran through Robinson.
Bijan accounted for 173 of Atlanta's 263 scrimmage yards, including 90 receiving yards and a touchdown.
That's ridiculous.
It's also not sustainable.
Atlanta's defense actually played well enough to win.
The offense simply couldn't generate enough unless Bijan was involved.
One man can't be the entire offense.
All by Myself.
CHICAGO BEARS
🎵 “We Will Rock You” — Queen
OFFENSE: A+ | DEFENSE: D
Fifty-nine.
Freaking.
Points.
Caleb Williams threw for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 65 yards and two more scores.
Then the running backs joined the party.
D'Andre Swift rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns.
Kyle Monangai also cracked 100 yards.
Chicago finished with 552 yards of offense and 291 rushing yards.
The defense giving up 37 points prevents this from being a perfect team performance.
But let's be serious.
You score 59?
Nobody cares today.
We Will Rock You.
CAROLINA PANTHERS
🎵 “Burning Down the House” — Talking Heads
OFFENSE: A- | DEFENSE: F
Imagine your quarterback throws for 361 yards.
Your offense scores 37 points.
And you lose by 22.
Welcome to Carolina.
Bryce Young gave the Panthers more than enough offensive production to win.
The defense responded by allowing 552 yards.
Chicago rushed for 291.
Thirty-seven points should win you an NFL game.
Apparently Carolina's defense disagreed.
Burning Down the House.
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
🎵 “Don’t Stop Me Now” — Queen
OFFENSE: A | DEFENSE: A+
Jacksonville didn't cool off.
Trevor Lawrence threw for 245 yards and reached a major career milestone with his 100th touchdown pass, connecting with rookie Josh Cameron.
More importantly, Jacksonville's offensive line kept Lawrence remarkably clean.
The defense did the rest.
Cleveland scored only 10 points.
Jacksonville won by 24.
The Jaguars have now won nine straight regular-season games dating back to last season.
That's no longer a cute little streak.
Jacksonville is rolling.
Don't Stop Me Now.
CLEVELAND BROWNS
🎵 “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” — Green Day
OFFENSE: D- | DEFENSE: D
Cleveland fans...
You knew something like this was coming.
Ten points.
A 24-point loss.
And Jacksonville looked like the vastly superior football team.
The Browns couldn't generate enough offense to put any legitimate pressure on Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars.
Maybe Week 1 becomes an anomaly.
Maybe Cleveland figures things out.
But after one week?
It's lonely out there.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
BUFFALO BILLS
🎵 “Holding Out for a Hero” — Bonnie Tyler
OFFENSE: A | DEFENSE: C-
At this point, Buffalo's game plan sometimes feels like:
Play football.
Things get weird.
Then Josh Allen saves everybody.
Allen threw for 334 yards and once again demonstrated why Buffalo is never truly out of a football game while he's standing behind center.
Dalton Kincaid was huge as well, finishing with 130 receiving yards.
The defense has work to do after allowing Houston to score 31.
But Buffalo has the ultimate equalizer.
The Bills needed a hero.
They've got one.
Holding Out for a Hero.
HOUSTON TEXANS
🎵 “Almost” — Bowling for Soup
OFFENSE: A- | DEFENSE: C
Thirty-one points.
Against Buffalo.
And still 0-1.
That's frustrating.
Houston's offense did enough to win this football game, but the Texans couldn't finish defensively when Josh Allen started doing Josh Allen things.
The especially concerning part was Houston's inability to consistently pressure Allen without bringing additional defenders.
Going toe-to-toe with Buffalo proves Houston belongs.
But eventually you have to stop being impressed by competing with elite teams.
You have to beat them.
Almost.
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
🎵 “Back in Black” — AC/DC
OFFENSE: A | DEFENSE: A
Come on.
There was never another option for the song.
Kirk Cousins opened his Raiders career with three touchdown passes, while Ashton Jeanty gave Las Vegas the physical rushing presence it wanted.
Jeanty cracked 100 yards.
The Raiders scored 27.
And the defense held Miami to 13.
That's about as good of an opening statement as Las Vegas could have asked for.
We're not booking Super Bowl hotels after Week 1.
But Raiders fans are absolutely allowed to ask:
What if we're actually good?
Back in Black.
MIAMI DOLPHINS
🎵 “Under Pressure” — Queen & David Bowie
OFFENSE: D | DEFENSE: D
It's Week 1.
And somehow the pressure is already building in Miami.
The Dolphins managed only 13 points while the defense surrendered 27 to Las Vegas.
That's not the type of opening performance that quiets offseason questions.
The Raiders controlled too much of the game, and Miami never consistently found the explosive offense necessary to answer.
One loss doesn't define a season.
But another performance like this?
Then things get interesting.
Under Pressure.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
🎵 “Tubthumping” — Chumbawamba
OFFENSE: A | DEFENSE: B-
Minnesota literally got knocked down.
And got up again.
Starting quarterback Kyler Murray left in the first quarter with a concussion.
Enter Carson Wentz.
Wentz came off the bench and helped lead an enormous Minnesota comeback, including two touchdown passes to Justin Jefferson.
The Vikings eventually scored 29 unanswered points and turned what looked like a nightmare opener into a 39-22 divisional victory.
Losing your starting quarterback in Week 1 could have destroyed the afternoon.
Instead, Minnesota responded.
Tubthumping.
GREEN BAY PACKERS
🎵 “What Hurts the Most” — Rascal Flatts
OFFENSE: C+ | DEFENSE: D
The stats make this one hurt even more.
Jordan Love threw for 387 yards.
Christian Watson went for 147 receiving yards and caught two first-half touchdowns.
And Green Bay lost by 17.
Love committed two damaging late turnovers as Minnesota completely flipped the game.
Defensively, the Packers couldn't stop the Vikings once Carson Wentz and Justin Jefferson found their rhythm.
Big numbers don't always mean good football.
Green Bay learned that the hard way.
What Hurts the Most.
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
🎵 “Another One Bites the Dust” — Queen
OFFENSE: B+ | DEFENSE: B+
Another Week 1.
Another Eagles win.
Jalen Hurts threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns, giving Philadelphia enough offense to survive a tough divisional matchup.
But the game's biggest moment came defensively.
Washington scored late and went for two to tie.
Moro Ojomo blew up the conversion attempt.
Game over.
Division games aren't about looking pretty.
They're about leaving 1-0.
Philadelphia did exactly that.
Another One Bites the Dust.
WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
🎵 “So Close” — Hall & Oates
OFFENSE: B+ | DEFENSE: B
One play.
That's how close Washington was.
Jayden Daniels and the Commanders walked into Philadelphia and nearly stole a divisional road victory.
Stefon Diggs caught a touchdown from Daniels as Washington continued answering Philadelphia.
Then came the final decision.
Touchdown.
Go for two.
Tie the game.
And Philadelphia stopped it.
Washington proved it can hang with the Eagles.
Now it has to finish them.
So Close.
ARIZONA CARDINALS
🎵 “Started From the Bottom” — Drake
OFFENSE: B+ | DEFENSE: A
This might have been the biggest surprise of Week 1.
Arizona entered the season carrying a nine-game losing streak from 2025.
Apparently nobody told the Cardinals they were supposed to lose again.
Jacoby Brissett managed the offense effectively, rookie Jeremiyah Love scored on Arizona's opening drive and Trey McBride caught a fourth-quarter touchdown that helped put the game away.
But the real story was Arizona's defense.
The Cardinals held Justin Herbert and the Chargers to only 14 points and shut Los Angeles out in the fourth quarter.
Arizona desperately needed something positive to build around.
They've got it.
Started From the Bottom.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
🎵 “Here I Go Again” — Whitesnake
OFFENSE: D | DEFENSE: C
Chargers fans know this feeling.
That's the problem.
Justin Herbert and the offense managed only 14 points against an Arizona team they were expected to beat.
The defense kept Los Angeles around for stretches, but the offense couldn't capitalize.
Then Arizona slammed the door in the fourth quarter.
New season.
High expectations.
Winnable game.
Disappointing loss.
Chargers fans have seen this episode before.
Here I Go Again.
NEW YORK GIANTS
🎵 “A New Day Has Come” — Céline Dion
OFFENSE: A | DEFENSE: A-
Okay, Giants fans.
You officially have permission to get excited.
In John Harbaugh's first game as Giants head coach, Jaxson Dart threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 54 yards on the ground.
Isaiah Likely caught two of those touchdown passes.
Cam Skattebo added another score.
And the defense made life difficult for Dallas throughout the night.
New coach.
Young quarterback.
Division win.
That's about as good as Week 1 gets.
A New Day Has Come.
DALLAS COWBOYS
🎵 “How You Remind Me” — Nickelback
OFFENSE: C | DEFENSE: D+
Cowboys fans spent all offseason convincing themselves:
This year will be different.
Then Week 1 arrived.
Dak Prescott threw for only 175 yards and added a costly interception.
Dallas generated 20 points, but the Cowboys never consistently controlled the game.
Defensively, they couldn't contain Jaxson Dart, particularly on his designed runs.
And just like that...
Dallas reminded everyone why Cowboys fans enter every season simultaneously confident and terrified.
Football is officially back.
And apparently...
So is the pain.
How You Remind Me.
DENVER BRONCOS
🎵 “Lose Yourself” — Eminem
OFFENSE: D | DEFENSE: D
Denver spent the offseason looking like one of the teams ready to take another step toward becoming an AFC powerhouse.
Then Monday night happened.
The Broncos walked into Arrowhead and walked out with a 31-10 reality check.
Bo Nix couldn't get comfortable from the beginning. His first possession ended with an interception, and Denver's offense never really recovered.
Nix finished with only 131 passing yards, while Kansas City sacked him four times.
The Broncos finished with just 176 total yards, nine first downs and two third-down conversions.
There was one legitimate bright spot: Nix connected with Evan Engram for a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
But those moments were few and far between.
Defensively, Denver wasn't much better.
Kenneth Walker III absolutely shredded the Broncos for a career-high 173 rushing yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run.
Denver entered Arrowhead with an opportunity to make a statement.
Instead, Kansas City made it for them.
One opportunity.
One game.
And Denver let it slip.
Lose Yourself.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
🎵 “Return of the Mack” — Mark Morrison
OFFENSE: A+ | DEFENSE: A+
Well...
The Empire might be back.
Kansas City entered Week 1 with something we haven't associated with the Chiefs in a long time:
Something to prove.
They answered immediately.
Patrick Mahomes, playing his first regular-season game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last December, accounted for three touchdowns.
Mahomes ran for a 15-yard touchdown, connected with Rashee Rice for another and later found Kenneth Walker III for a score.
But Walker completely stole the show.
In his Chiefs debut, Kenneth Walker III rushed for a career-high 173 yards and scored twice.
His signature moment came early in the second half.
Fourth-and-one.
Kansas City hands Walker the football.
Sixty yards later?
Touchdown.
At that point, Walker had personally outgained the entire Denver offense.
That's ridiculous.
The Chiefs finished with 392 total yards and 220 rushing yards.
Defensively?
Just as impressive.
Kansas City intercepted Bo Nix on Denver's third offensive play, sacked him four times and held the Broncos to only 176 total yards.
Denver converted just two of 12 third downs.
This wasn't Patrick Mahomes pulling another fourth-quarter magic trick.
This wasn't Kansas City barely surviving.
The Chiefs controlled Denver.
And after an offseason filled with questions about whether the Kansas City era was finally winding down, the Chiefs gave everyone a very simple Week 1 response:
Not yet.
Return of the Mack.
🎧 WEEK 1 REPORT CARD
🏆 VALEDICTORIAN — JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
OFFENSE: A | DEFENSE: A+
Thirty-four points scored.
Ten allowed.
Nine straight regular-season wins dating back to last season.
Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars might deserve considerably more attention than they're getting.
📚 HONOR ROLL
Kansas City — Offense: A+ | Defense: A+
Kenneth Walker III runs for 173. Patrick Mahomes accounts for three touchdowns. The defense allows 176 total yards.
Welcome back.
San Francisco — Offense: A- | Defense: A+
Twenty-seven to seven against a division rival.
That's a statement.
Las Vegas — Offense: A | Defense: A
Kirk Cousins throws three touchdowns, Ashton Jeanty runs for 100-plus and the defense allows only 13.
That's one hell of an opening statement.
Baltimore — Offense: A+ | Defense: A-
Lamar Jackson.
Derrick Henry.
Zay Flowers.
Good luck.
New York Giants — Offense: A | Defense: A-
Jaxson Dart looked the part and John Harbaugh starts his Giants tenure 1-0.
Chicago — Offense: A+ | Defense: D
We're not sure how you score 59 points and still have something significant to complain about.
The Bears found a way.
📝 SEE ME AFTER CLASS
Carolina Panthers Defense — F
Let's make sure we understand what happened here.
Bryce Young threw for 361 yards.
Carolina scored 37 points.
And the Panthers lost by 22.
There are bad defensive performances.
Then there's allowing 59 points and 552 yards.
Bring your playbook.
Coach wants to see you.
🔥 WEEK 1 MVP — KENNETH WALKER III
There were some ridiculous individual performances this week.
Lamar Jackson threw for 324.
Derrick Henry rushed for 144.
Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 156.
Bryce Young threw for 361.
Tyler Shough threw for 410.
But we're giving the Week 1 crown to Kenneth Walker III.
First game in Kansas City.
173 rushing yards.
Two touchdowns.
A 60-yard touchdown on fourth-and-one.
And a dominant victory over Denver on Monday Night Football.
That's how you introduce yourself to a new fanbase.
FINAL THOUGHT
Week 1 never tells us everything.
But it always tells us something.
Jacksonville might be for real.
Baltimore remains terrifying.
The Jets suddenly look competent.
Minnesota discovered Carson Wentz might still have some magic left.
Arizona shocked the Chargers.
The Giants have something brewing with Jaxson Dart.
The Raiders might actually have something.
And just when everyone started wondering whether the Kansas City era was finally over...
Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker III showed up Monday night and reminded everybody who has been running the AFC for the better part of a decade.
Meanwhile, Cowboys fans are upset.
Browns fans are miserable.
Broncos fans are trying to forget Monday night.
And Panthers defensive coaches probably haven't slept.
In other words:
The NFL is officially back.
See you in Week 2.
